A Galician surname. A noble and old lineage of Galicia that settled in the province of Orense. Baños de Velasco says that it had solar in Xinzo de Limia. In the judicial district of Ribadavia, in the same province, there is a place called Barroso, from which the family undoubtedly took the surname.
Diego Hernández de Mendoza says that its true origin is in Portugal, from where they went to Spain. The truth is that since ancient times they flourished in Galicia, from where they spread to Portugal, passing from there back to Spain.
Other branches of this surname were in the provinces of León, Palencia, Toledo and Cáceres, as well as in Andalusia.
They also proved their nobility before the Hall of the Hijosdalgo of the Royal Chancery of Valladolid, in the years that are indicated: Francisco Barroso, neighbor of Galistro, in 1504; Juan Barroso, neighbor of Casa de Don Millán, in 1528; Juan de Barroso, neighbor of Llombera (León), in 1553; Juan de Barroso, neighbor of Portillo, in 1556, and Juan de Barroso, neighbor of Yeles (Toledo), in 1560.
They tested their nobility before the Royal Chancery of Granada: Cristóbal Barroso y Garcés, neighbor of Pruna (Seville), in 1698, and Isabel Ana Barroso Torrubia, neighbor of Huétor Vega (Granada), in 1776.
They proved their blood cleansing to hold positions of the Holy Office of the Inquisition of Toledo: Juan Bautista Barroso, a native and neighbor of the Casar de Talavera (Toledo), a priest, for a Notary, in 1625, and Ana Barroso Pérez, a native of Vallecas (Madrid) ) and her husband Josef de Arespezueta, a native of Bilbao and a neighbor of Madrid, for Familiar, in 1701.
