BARROVAD: A stone discovered in the priory church at Whithorn in 1891 bears an inscription in barbarous Latin, probably of the fourth or fifth century A.D. The inscription reads: Te Doininvj Lavdamvs Latinos annorv XXXV et filia sva annfortm] IV lc si nvm fecerv[njt nepvs Barrovadi, "We praise thee Lord, Latinus aged 35 years and his daughter aged 4 (rest) here. The descendant of Barrovados made (this) monument" (Mackenzie, Scotland: the ancient kingdom, p. 110). Mr. Francis Diack renders the name "long head" (PSAS., LIX, p. 264). An excellent illustration of the stone from a photograph is given in the Inventory of the Galloway Monuments, p. 164, fig. 109A.
