A barrowraan is defined in the Dictionary of the Old Scottish Tongue as "one who helps to carry a hand-barrow." Heu Reillie was barrow man to Sornbeg, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 401). The name is spelled Barraman in Workman's MS. William Barrowman or Baroumane had a charter of the lands of Fortrie in the sheriffdom of Banff from David II (RMS., I, App. II, 1033. In the British Museum MS. his name is spelled Borrowman). Alexander Burowma was a witness in Edinburgh in 1468 (Neubotle, 301), Lokky Barrowman was banished from Aberdeen in 1570 (CRA., p. 367), John Barrowman was accused of tumult in Culross, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 44), William Burrouman appears in Upper Kidston, 1684 (ibid., 3. ser. X, p. 315) and another John Barrowman served on an inquest in Dunfermline in 1705 (Fordell, p. 180). The name also appears in the Edinburgh Marriage Records. "There seems to be some confusion between this name, which is sometimes spelt Barram and Baron" (Stodart, II, p. 214). J. Barrowman is author of Scots mining terms, 1886.
