(a) Local, 'of Barton.' There are twenty-six parishes so called in Crockford. The origin is the same as (1), with this difference, that 'barton,' the single enclosure, had already grown into Barton, the hamlet or town.

Chalmers (Dunfermline, II, p. 307) says that Bartons from Yorkshire came to Scotland after a contest with Edward 111, but persons of the name are in Scottish record at an earlier date. Thomas de Bartone of Ayrshire rendered homage in 1296 and had his lands restored to him (Bain, II, p. 214,219). Adam de Bartone of Berwickshire also rendered homage (ibid,, p. 206). John de Bertoun was juror on an inquisition at Lanark, 1432 (RAA., II, 65). Robert Barton of Ovirberntoun or Over Barton married the daughter of Moubray of Barnbougle Castle, and was allowed to assume the name of Moubray by Act of Parliament, 10 May, 1527 (APS., II, p. 320). Chalmers (op. cit., p. 456) says other Bartons changed their name to Stedman. William Bartane in Queensferry was charged with assault, 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 423), and Adam Bartane was merchant burgess in Edinburgh, 1647 (Inquis., 3360). Robert Bartane of Risk signed the Test in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X. p. 227). The death of Sir Andrew Barton, naval commander to James IV is described in an old ballad. In the Erl inburgh Marriage Records the name occurs as Bartane, Barten, and Bartoun. Bertane 1550, Berton 1529.
