A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname, as shown by the examples quoted, is merely a variant of the name Bartholomew, which see. Alisaundre Bertholmeu of the county of Edinburgh rendered homage in 1206 (Bain, II, p. 201). In 1343 William Bertylmnn rendered to Exchequer the account of the provost (propositus) of Edinburgh (ER., I, p. 521). In the preceding year the same individual, as William Bartholomei, was rewarded for his share in the capture of Edinburgh Castle (ibid., p. 522). A second payment was made to him in 1343 when his name occurs in the form Bertilmen (ibid., p. 522). A fourth spelling of his name occurs in 1368 when he is referred to as "Willelmus Bertillmew in burgo de Edynburgche" (RMS., I, 284). Alexander Bartleman appears in Westhilles, parish of Dunsyre, in 1661 (Lanark CR.), another Alexander Bartleman appears in Symningtoune, 1708 (Lanark Justices, p. 37). The final II is doubtless a miscopying of u in the Exchequer Rolls. Bartlmen 1662.
