(See Cock.) A sub-diminutive of Bartholomew. Badecok and Batecok, H.R. The form Batecok is suggestive of ' fighting cock' which may be the true source of the name, from ' bate,' conflict, combat; a sobriquet given to a boxer, or metaphorically to a quarrelsome person.
The Rev. Samuel Badcock, the eminent divine, was born at South Molton in 1747, the son of a butcher, and the name still belongs to that trade in the town. There was a William Badecok in Cambridgeshire in the 13th century (H. R.).
