User-submitted Reference
Basque surname. Its etymology is difficult. One hypothesis is a toponym with the meaning of 'Zarzal', or 'Site of brambles', derived from [ata] (Bramble), and the locative suffix [-iz] (Site of). For others it means 'Of the Union' or 'Alliance', considering it to be composed of the roots [bat], which in Eusquera is the number one, and [itz/iz], which, according to this interpretation, would be a residue of the abundant [-tza]. The majority maintains that Basque surnames ending in [-ez/-iz], indicate that the place was originally owned by the person whose name appears together with the mentioned suffix. Thus, Bat-iz would designate a site originally owned by Bat, a personal name equivalent to Primo, meaning 'The First'. For some researchers, it is a suffix of Eusquera and pre-Roman origin; the majority, however, attribute it to a survival of the Latin genitive singular '-is', with the value of possession or belonging. Bat-iz, could come from a hypothetical Battius, to which, if the suffix '-icus' is added, Batticus would be obtained. The proper of Batticus and his descendants would be Battici, from which Batiz would finally derive.
