This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Bawtry,' a small market town near Doncaster. (2) Local, 'at the Bortree' or 'Bawtree,' i.e. the elderberry, from residence thereby; compare Rowntree, Birch, Nash, Nutbeam, &c. A word still in use in Furness. Elderberry wine is there' bor-tree' or 'bawtry-jack.' Bawtry or Bortery Stile is a farmstead in my old parish, and is found in many spellings in the Ulverston church register.
