Bayne Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Like Bain this name is from Gaelic ban 'white.' Duncan Bayne, son of Alexander Bayne, burgess of Dingwall, had a grant of the lands of Tulche (Tulloch) and others in 1542 (RMS., III, 2737), and as Duncan Bane of Tullich he witnessed an Inverness charter of the following year (Laing, 467). The mill of Kethyk was let to William Bayn in 1469 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 151), Johnne Bayne was tenant in Wall in Tiree in 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 614), Thomas Bayne rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the burgh of Craile in 1558 (ibid., XIX, p. 39), and another Thomas Baynne, baker, was burgess of Edinburgh in 1572 (Laing, 874). The name is also found in Edinburgh in 1530 (MCM., II, p. 98), and Ewir Bayne alias Quhyte was murdered in Colonsay in 1623 (Trials, III p. 553). By some clan historians the Baynes are reckoned a branch of the Clan Mackay. The name has no connection with English Bayne, a surname of Norman origin. The "banes' in the arms of the Scottish family are merely canting heraldry. Baine 1611, Bayn 1607.
= Bain, q.v.
An English name occasionally used as a synonym of Bane, q.v
In Scotland this name is probably in some instances a corruption of the Gaelic word "Baan," or "Bhaan" white-but as the arms are bones (Scottice banes) placed saltier-wise, it is possibly equivalent to Bane or Bone.
