An old surname of toponymic origin from the Spanish region of Navarre, relatively frequent and spread through Spain, although it registers mainly in Andalusia, Community of Madrid and provinces of Saragossa and Barcelona.
It was the noble house of Bazán, one of the twelve wealthy houses of the Kingdom of Navarre, which in 1135 instituted the King Garci Ramirez, in imitation of the twelve peeragea of France.
The Bazán descended from the Royal Houses of Navarre, Aragon and Castile. As their Knights were Lords of the Baztán Valley (also called Bazán or Jauriguizar) they took this name as a surname. Pedro Hortuño de Bazán, second Lord of this house and Valley, in 1136, was the father of Sancho de Bazán, third Lord of the house and Valle del Baztán. There are branches of the surname Bazán in the conquest of Andalusia, where we find knights of this lineage in the taking (from the Moors) of the city of Baeza (Jaén), in 1227. The historian Argote de Molina, in his "Nobility of Andalusia" (Seville, 1558) mentions Alvaro de Bazán, General of the galleys of Spain. He was the father of Álvaro Bazán, first Marquess of Santa Cruz, Comendador Mayor of Leon, of the Council of his Majesty and his Captain General of the Mar Océano and kingdoms of Portugal. The meaning of the name Bazán / Baztán is 'bush', 'great forests' or 'mountainous valley'.
Coat of Arms: Checkered in silver and sabre; a heraldic red border with eight gold crosses.
