A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Most probably diminutives of Bartholomew, which see. Andrew Bet and William Bet were burgesses of Edinburgh, 1344. Andrew Bet had a confirmation charter of certain lands and burgages in the burghs of Edynburghe and Stryvelyne in 1369, and in 1375 he conceded to Cristiane his spouse a tenement in Edinburgh (RMS., I, 323,625). Thomas Bet, witness in Arnbroath, 1466 appears as sub-prior of the monastery, 1482 (RAA., II, p. 155,184). John Beatt was couper in the parish of Cargill, 1654 (Dunblane), Thomas Beat is in record in Peathill, parish of Kettill. 1655 and three more of the name are in the vicinity (St. Andrews). William Beet, blacksmith in Aberdeen, 1791 (Aberdeen CR.). The origin for the name offered by Mr. J. M Beatts (SN&Q., XI, p. 156) is too silly for credence.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

This surname today is confined mainly to the shires of Perth and Fife. Andrew Bet and William Bet were burgesses of Edinburgh, 1344. Galfridus filius Betti witnessed a charter by John Skinner, burgess of Inverness, c. 1360 (Grant, III, p. 12), and in 1370 Andrew Bet, a Scottish merchant, complained of being plundered by English wreckers (Bain, IV, 164). Andrew Bet or Beth appears as burgess of Edinburgh, 1368—69—81 (RMS., I, 323; Egidii, p. I, 22). Walter Bet, rector of Craginche, 1440, appears in 1442 as witness to the foundation charter of the Collegiate Church of Kilmwne (OPS., II, p. 96). Thomas Bet was a monk of Arbroath, 1467 (RAA., II, 174), William Bett qualified as schoolmaster in Kirkcaldy, 1641 (PBK., p. 202), and Hugh Bett was maltman in Edinburgh, 1669 (Edinb. Marr.). Twenty-seven of the name are recorded in the Kirk Session Record of St. Andrews. Harrison says (1) a form of Beat, meaning blessed, happy, or (2) a diminutive of Beatrice.
