From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

BEATHAG: This is the feminine of Beathan, for which see under Bean. According to M'Vurich in his Book of Clanranald Beathog was the name of a daughter of Somerled, "a religious woman and a Black Nun. It was she that erected Teampull Chairinis, or the church of Cairinis. in Uist" (Rel. Celt., II, p. 157). According to Martin her tombstone in Iona bears: Behag Nijn Sorle vie Ilvrid Priorissa (W. I., p. 263). Gillecrist MacNachdan in his grant of the church of Kilmorich, 1247, mentions his wife Bethoc (Inchaffray, p. 65). Bethoc, sole daughter of Donald Bane, king of Scotland, was ancestress of John Comyn, lord of Badenoch, a claimant to the Crown in 1291. Bethoc or Beatrice (as Fordun Latinizes the name, IV, 39) was daughter of Malcolm II, and wife of Crinan of Dunkeld, "Bethok fayr

Scho was to Cryny in hir lyff,

The abbot of Dunkeldenys wifi."

as Wyntoun tells us (bk. 6, c. 10, 11. 877—880). Another MS. of Wyntoun gives her name as Betow. Richard son of Dunegal and his wife Bethoc gave a ploughgate of land in Rughcestre to the Abbey of Jedburgh (RMS., I, App. I, 94; Lawrie, p. 408) From this Bethoc the lands of Rulebethoc, now Bedrule in Roxburghshire, take their name, and Croftbethoc in Cumberland (1200), a now extinct place name, had its origin from another lady of the same name. Dolbethoc ('Bethoc's holme' - Watson) was granted by Gilchrist, earl of Mar to the Culdees of Munimusc (Manymusk) before 1211 (RPSA., p. 371—72). Bethoc was also the name of the wife of Donald Macgilleni of Ross in 1438 (Pap. Lett., IX, p. 12). Bahag Neuyntouchirly held the four merk lands of Terblaren in 1471 (RMS., II, 1044). With gille-prefixed it forms Gilbethoc, the name of a witness in an inquest concerning the ownership of the lands of Monachkeneran in 1233 (RMP., p. 167; Innes, Legal antiquities, p. 218). The name has been absurdly Englishe Sophia! In the seventeenth century usually spelled Baik, Baike, and Beak. Beak Crowbycht was an "vnfre baxter" in Inverness in 1577 (Rec. Inc., p. 258).
