From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Beauchamp.' Mr. Lower mentions a Beauchamp near Avranches, and another near Havre. Its equivalent local term in England is Fairfield. Hugh de Bel-Champ, or Beauchamp (latinized in early records as 'de Bello-Campo'), obtained forty-three lordships from the Conqueror (Lower). Some of the variants may relate to some spot called Beecham (compare Ashton), which would make them purely English, but I cannot find such a place.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

This illustrious name is found in many countries of Europe - e.g. in France as Beauchamp, in Scotland as Campbell, in England as Fairfield, in Germany as Schonau, and in Italy as Campobello. It was introduced into England at the Norman Conquest by Hugh de Belchamp, Beauchamp, or de Bello Campo, to whom William gave 43 lordships, chiefly in the county of Bedford. Between forty and fifty coats are assigned in the armorial dictionaries to this name, which, in vulgar parlance, is vilely corrupted to Beecham. The Itin. de la Normandie mentions a Beauchamp near Avranches, and a Beaucamp near Havre.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

(Northen French) De Beauchamp, from the fair or beautiful field; in Latin. De Bello Campo.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

From Beauchamp, in the Cotentin, part of the Barony of St. Denis le Gaste (De Gerville, Anc. Chateaux). This family was a branch of the Barons of St. Denis, and of the same race as the Meurdracs, Montagues, and Grenvilles, which were armorially identified. The history of the Beauchamps, Barons of Bedford, Earls and Dukes of Warwick, &c., is too well known to be dwelt on. Hence the Baronets Beauchamp.
