It originates in two words from Old German: bold, meaning 'proud' or 'courageous' and win, meaning 'friend'. The closest spelling to this today is to be found in Baldwin. The spelling Baudouin is a first name, which a former king of the Belgians bore. King Baudouin's family name was Sachsen-Coburg in German or Saxe-Cobourg in French. Saint Baudouin was an arch-deacon of the cathedral of Laon (Picardie, France) and was assassinated in 679.
