In 1180 Malger Bechet held lands in the Viscounty of Rouen (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). John and William Beket, or Bekeit, also occur (Ib.), and Humfrid and William Beket, 1198 (Ib.). Thomas Beket's father was of Caen. Ralph de Beket was of England, c. 1272 (RH.). From hence derived the Baronets Becket, and the famous Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. William Becket, t. Stephen, witnessed the charter of Bolingbroke Priory, Linc. (Mon. ii. 795). John B. gave lands to Tupholme, Linc., t. John (Mon. ii. 596).
Beckett is an old name in the county. Captain George Becket, of Nantwich, was born in 1644. The Rev. George Becket was vicar of Eastham in the reign of Charles II. (O.). There are also Becketts in Norfolk and Notts.
