This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Beckwith,' a hamlet in the parish of Pannall, near Harrogate, Yorkshire (compare Askwith; no doubt the suffix is a variant of worth; v. Worth). This surname is strongly established in Boston (U.S). 'Robert Beckwith, went out in 1635 in the Transport, bound for Virginia' (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants).
