This name is the same as Gaulish Bed-aios, Old Bret. Bedoe or Bidoe. Bede cruthnec ('the Piet'), mormaer of Buchan, bestowed the town of Abbordoboir (Aberdour in Buchan) on the Abbey of Deer (Bk. Deer, I, 3, 8). Bede Ferdan of Monachkeneran, who lived in a great house built of twigs (domo magna fabricata de virgis) was one of four individuals bound or set apart to receive and entertain all pilgrims repairing to the church of S. Patrick at Kilpatrick, Dumbartonshire. The inquisition of 1233 which gives this information says that he lived sixty years previously, and was slain in defence of the rights of the church (RMP., p. 166—107). Another Beda or Bede, canon of Glasgow, appears in record c. 1175—1207 (LCD., p. 235; RMP. p. 99,101, 109,110), and witnessed the gift by Maldowen, son of Alwin, of the church of Kamsi (Campsie) to Goa and S. Kentigem c. 1208—1214 (REG., p. 88). William folius Bede witnessed the gift of the church of Cadinros to the church of Glasgow by the same earl c. 1208—1233 (REG., p. 93; Levenax, p. 14). Another Bede, rector of the church of Muyethe, appears as charter witness in 1284 (LIM., p. XXXVI). Bede the ecclesiastical historian of England is said to have been of Celtic descent.
