Beechey Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the Beechey,' i.e. the beech-isle, the little island covered with beech-trees. Seemingly some small islet in one of the streams or rivers in Oxfordshire.—I wrote the above several years ago, but I find a second derivation, and possibly the true one in all cases:
Brownyng Bycheheye, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
This means Browning at the Beech-hey, i.e. he lived beside the beech enclosure; v. Hey, a field enclosed by beech-trees.
Thomas de la Bechey, Oxfordshire. 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1769. Married — William Beechey and Francis McLaughlin: St. George, Hanover Square.
(Engl. Dweller at 1 the Beech Island or River-Meadow. [Old English béce + íg] 2 the Beech-Enclosure. [Old English béce + haga]
