From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

BEGE: A personal name descriptive of the original bearer or bearers, from Gaelic beag, little, small of stature. Malcol beg filius gilascop witnessed the gift by Maldouen, son of Alwin, earl of Leuenas, of the church of Kamsi (Campsie) to God and S. Kentigem, c. 1208—14 (REG., p. 88). In another (earlier) charter, but of same period, of same church to the same he appears as Male, filius Gillescop (ibid., p. 87). He may have been a son of Gillescop Galbrath as his name follows immediately that of the latter. His son, Sir Malcolm, was the first to assume the name of Drummond, which see. Malcolm Beg or Begge, seneschal of Maldoweny, earl of Levenax between 1225 and 1250 (Kelso, 222), witnessed a charter by that earl to Stephen de Blantyre, c. 1248 (Levenax, p. 36), and also witnessed other charters by the same earl between 1224 and 1250 (ibid., p. 13, 14, 96, 98; RMP., p. 161,209, 211,217). He also probably witnessed a charter by Maldowen, third earl of Levenax before 1270 (Levenax, p. 20). Malise Beg was burgess of Stirling before 1300 (Laing, 18), Patrick Begge was a hobelar in Edinburgh Castle in 1312 (Bain, p. 409), and John Beg was one of the workmen employed in the construction of Cardross Castle in 1329 (ER., I, p. 128). Part of the lands of Parcy was leased to John Beg, son of Gylglass, in 1463 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 136). Robert Beige was a tenant of the marquis of Huntlie in 1600 (SCM., IV, p. 262). The name is common in the Edinburgh Marriage Records of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Other old forms are Bege (1574) and Beig.
