Begg Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Begg and Beggs are now about equally numerous in Ireland, the latter belonging mainly to northeast Ulster and the former to Dublin and adjacent Leinster counties. Ulster families so called may be Of non-Irish origin — there is of course, an English surname Bigge — but it is reasonably certain that the Beggs of the rest of the country are of native Irish stock. their name being of the epithet class: the word beag (beg) means small. It has been used as a surname from very early times and occurs in every sort of record from the fourteenth century. These people belonged to every class from labourers to landlords: among the more interesting are four who were outlawed as Jacobites (two of these were from Galway, the only place outside Munster and Leinster where they are at all prominent —— their close association with Ulster was of later date). Two more, Matthew and George Begg, were among the Papists transplanted from counties Dublin and Meath in 1656.
