This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Belencombre,' in the arrondissement of Dieppe, in Normandy. The present forms are imitative. There is not the slightest evidence in favour of an origin akin to Bellhouse. Dr. Charnock has unwisely permitted himself to write as follows: 'A friend assures me he knows of a William Chambers who changed his name to Bill-chambers, of which he says Bellchambers is a corruption' (Ludus Patronymicus). 'Save me from my friends' receives a fresh consecration after this.
