From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A surname of Fife and Kinross-shire which appears to be simply a corruption of Beveridge, which see, with intrusive l (compare the spellings Colquhran-Cochrane, Calmeron-Cameron, waiter-water). John Belfrage was taken to Sweden in infancy, became burgomaster of Venersborg and was ennobled in 1666. Andrew Belfrage was commissioner to Parliament for Dunfermline, 1681 (APS., VIII, p. 233). Henry Belfradge was heir of James Belfradge, portioner of Netherbaith, his father, 1684 (Refouns, Fife, 1245). John Belverage, flesher in Dunfermline, 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 151). Thomas Belfrage or Beveridge held lands on the foreshore of Lochleven under Sir William Bruce, 1690. The form Belfrage seems to have been dropped in his family after that date as his sons and grandsons are called Beveridge in subsequent records. David Belfrage was treasurer of Culross, 1721 (Culross and Tulliallan, II, p. 93), and John Belfrage was merchant there, 1744 (Dunblane).
