This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Belencombre,' in the arrondissement of Dieppe, in Normandy. The present forms are imitative. There is not the slightest evidence in favour of an origin akin to Bellhouse. Dr. Charnock has unwisely permitted himself to write as follows: 'A friend assures me he knows of a William Chambers who changed his name to Bill-chambers, of which he says Bellchambers is a corruption' (Ludus Patronymicus). 'Save me from my friends' receives a fresh consecration after this.

Unless the name is for a Middle English *bele- chamberere-Fair Handmaid. [v. Bell2, and + Middle English chamberere, Old French chamberiere, a handmaid]

For Bellencombre or De Warrenne, from Bellencombre Castle, near Dieppe, the baronial seat of the Earls Warrenne and Surrey. Bernard de Bellencombre held lands in Suffolk, 1080. William de Bellecombre paid in Normandy 1457, due by his father (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). John and Robert Bellencombre occur in Essex, c. 1272 (Rotuli Hundredorum). In t. Elizabeth, William Belconger occurs in Norfolk, and at length the name changed to Bellchamber.
