Bellett Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Isabel', from the nick. Bel, diminutive Bel-ot or Bel-et; v. Bell (1). The writer of the article on Hugh Bellotf 1543-96), bishop of Chester (Dictionary of National Biography iv.' 95), says, 'The Bellots were early seated in Norfolk. ... It has been suggested that the name is derived from belette, a weasel, or belotte, gentle, pretty. ... We find the name spelt in various ways: Billet, Bellott, Billett, &c.' After writing the above I find a local origin implied by two entries in Blomefield's History of Norfolk. If correct, those entries are entitled to the first consideration. But I strongly suspect a double origin.
