When Polwhele wrote his history of the county nearly a century ago, the Bellews had been lords of the manor of Stockleigh - English for more than 150 years, John Bellew being then in possession. William Bellew was steward of the city of Exeter in 1720 (I.). Henry Bellew was mayor of Barnstaple in 1805 (G.), and the name is still in that neighbourhood.
