Bellie Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Probably from Bellie in Moray. Robe Bellie, member of bailie court, Stennes, Orkney, 1576 (OSR., I, p. 269). The tenement of the heirs of William Bellie in Brechin is mentioned in 1643 (REB., II, 247), and Margaret Bellie is recorded in Dunrossness, Shetland, in 1648 (Shetland). Mr. John Bellie was schoolmaster of Kinglessie in 1650 (PBK., p. 365), Christian Bellie is recorded in Edinburgh in 1670 (Edinb. Marr.), and James Bellie in Rossie in 1671 (Laing, 2679). Fraser's suggestion (History of Laurencekirk, p. 269) that the name is probably the same as Bailie and Baillie and that "the difference in spelling is not against this supposition, as the three forms applied to the same name during a great part of the seventeenth century," is, I think unlikely.
