This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Bellingham' a parish in Northumberland, (a) Local, 'of Billingham,' a parish in County Durham, I strongly suspect that some small spot, also called Bellingham, existed or exists in Norfolk, whence some of our Bellinghams and Billinghams. Mr. Lower says there is a family of Bellinghams in Sussex, 'sprung from Belingeham, a manor near Hastings, mentioned in Domesday' (Patr. Brit).

From the manor of Bellingham in Northumberland. In 1279 it was stated that the family of Bellingham held their manor of Bellingham, from which they derived their name, by service of being foresters "for time beyond memory" of the king of Scotland's ancestors in the forest of Tynedale (Bain, II, p. 52). William de Billingham witnessed a charter of lands in Raynigton to the Abbey of Coldingham in 1275 (Raine, 387). The seal of William de Bellingham is appended to an indenture of 1285 (Seals, Supp. 93). William de Billingham of the county of Berewyke, perhaps the same person, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206), and Alexander de Belingeham was a Scots prisoner taken in Dunbar Castle, in same year (ibid., p. 177).
