From the occupation of "bellman" or town-crier. Gilbert Belman prope portam de Futye in 1398 (REA., II, p. 213). Philip Belman was amerced in 1505 "for the Sellinge of ane apill for ane penny, quhar he micht have sauld thre for ane penny" (CRA., p. 75). Andrew Bellman is in record at the Mylne of Muckarsie in 1653 (Dunblane), and Magnus Belman in Caithness in 1663 (Caithness). The best known bellman in Scottish history is Dougal Graham (c. 1724—1779), skellat-bellman of Glasgow, author of several popular chapbooks and of "A Full Particular and True Account of the Rebellion in the Years 1745—6," Glasgow, 1746.
