The surname Belov dates back to the nicknames of Belaya, Belyay, which were widespread in Russia until the 17th century. All these surnames undoubtedly come from the nicknames of blond, white-faced people; a whitish man was also called a tidy man. Belyay is known as the ancient non-church; the name and in this capacity could break away from its common noun. 'Not everyone who was named Belyay was white, and Chernyai or Chernyshi were black,' notes linguist A. M. Selishchev. (F).
