The surname Belov dates back to the nicknames of Belaya, Belyay, which were widespread in Russia until the 17th century. Such nicknames could indicate external signs (light complexion, hair), any qualities of a person (kind, light), or 'whitewashed', ie free of taxes. White, eventually got the name Belov.

All these surnames undoubtedly come from the nicknames of blond, white-faced people; a whitish man was also called a tidy man. Belyay is known as the ancient non-church; the name and in this capacity could break away from its common noun. 'Not everyone who was named Belyay was white, and Chernyai or Chernyshi were black,' notes linguist A. M. Selishchev. (F). The appearance in the second position is characteristic of surnames of Polish origin: Bialkowski - Bialkowski. (U). BUT Bialko, Bialik - Ukrainian. Belyaev.
