From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
BELSCHES, Belshes: From the barony of the same name in the lordship of Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, which belonged to the monks of Jedburgh. The barony may have been named by some earlier owner from Belasis (so spelled also in 1305) in Northumberland, Bellasis (1345 Belasis) in Durham, or from Bellasis which is near Coulommieres in Seine-et-Mame department, France. The seal of Richard de Belchis is appended to his homage of 1296 (Seals. Supp., 86). Alexander Belschis was bailie of Edinburgh, 1530 (EBR., p. 43), John Belcheis of Tofts was commissioner for the Tweed fisheries dispute in 1627 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 75), and Alexander Belschellis of Tofts was admitted burgess of Glasgow, gratis, 1631 (Burgesses). Alexander Belseis of Tofts was appointed Justice of the Peace for Berwickshire in 1634 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 379), and in 1651 Alexander Belsches was one of the Committee of Provisions for the Army (SBR., p. 198). The direct line ended in John Belshes of that Ilk who left four daughters and coheiresses in 1721 (Stodart, II, p. 328).
