Benzie or Bainzie, with alterations into Badyno, Badenocht, etc., was a common name among Inverurie proprietors in fifteenth and sixteenth centuries (Inverurie, p. 50). James Banyeaucht took part in the election of parish clerk of Inverurie, 1536 (ibid., p. 142), and Johnne Baynze at the cross of Inuerowrie appears in 1576 (Trials, I, p. 48). Robert Benzie in 1703, one of the elders of the kirk, was charged with conduct amounting to witchcraft (AEI., p. 114). John Bainzie, macer of the Justice Court of Edinburgh, sought payment of his fees, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 184). Three brothers named Benzie in Marnoch and William Beange from Turriff served in the first Great War (Turriff). Old: Bangzie, Banzie, Beingzie.
