(English, Swiss, German) One who came from Bernes (bear), in Normandy, or from Bern (place where bears abounded), a city and canton in Switzerland, or from Bern, in Germany.
From Bernes, near Beauvais. Nicholas de Bernes, 1167, was a benefactor to Beauvais Abbey. Adam, his son, lived 1221; and from him descended the Sires de Bernes, Castellans of Longvillers (Des Bois). Agnes de Bernes occurs in Oxford, and Robert de B. in Wilts, c. 1272 (Rotuli Hundredorum).
