(French)Bel. to Bernay or Berné (France) = a Barony. [Old French berné, barné: v. under Bar(r)on]
The baronet's family are asserted to have been seated at Berney, near Walsingham, co. Norfolk, at the time of the Norman Conquest-a great improbability, although their very early settlement there cannot be questioned. Bernays is of distinct origin, being a recent importation from Germany; it is supposed that the latter family were originally French, and that they derived their designation from the town of Bernay, in the department of the Eure, in Normandy.
Probably the same as Bernay. A Ralph de Bernai occurs in the Domesd. of Worcester and Hereford.
1, from Berney, Norfolk; 2, from Bernai, near Lisieux. Ralph de Bernai, of Worcester and Hereford, witnessed a charter of Malmsbury Abbey, t. William I. (Mon. i. 53), and was a tenant of William Fitz- Osborne, Earl of Hereford (i. 129). In 1096 Robert de Bernay witnessed a charter of Stephen, Count of Aumerle, for the monks of Beauvais (Monasticon Anglicanum). The Baronets Berney derive their name from the English locality.
[Bernwell, Barnwell] William de Burnavilla held lands in Norfolk and Suffolk, 1086 (Domesd.), Robert and William de Bernwell in 1165 (Liber Niger). The former, t. Stephen, witnessed a charter of Briset Abbey, Suffolk (Mon. ii. 871). John de Burnaville, of Suffolk, 1316, was at the battle of Boroughbridge, 1322 (Palgr. Parl. Writs). This family, which bore a saltire, was different from that of Barnewal, ancestors of Lord Trimleston, &c.
