From old lands of the name in Berwickshire. In record the name sometimes appears as Bernhame, Beringham, and even Benham, without 'de' preceding it. David de Bernham witnessed a charter of the tithes of the church of Kinghorn to Holyrood, 1204—1214 (LSC., p. 38). David de Bernham, camerarius, witnessed a charter by Alexander II a. 1243, and as de Beringham attested another charter by the same king (Neubotle, p. 16, 17). He was also witness to a charter by his brother Robert de Bernham of four shillings a year ad luminare to the church of St. Andrews (RPSA., p. 272). David de Bernham, camerarius, was consecrated bishop of St. Andrews 1239—40 (Dowden, p. 14). Robertus de Bernham was one of the twelve knights appointed in 1249 to meet the same number from England to settle the laws of the marches (APS , I, p. 413). Thomas de Berneham witnessed a gift of land to the Hospital of Soltre, 1250—1266 (Soltre, p. 32). Mistress Agnes de Bernham, prioress of Berwick, rendered homage, 1291 (RR.).
