The Yorkshire folk have a strong propensity for quaint and humorous baptismal names. Father and son are thus described in the West Riding Directory (Stainland): John Berry, shopkeeper; Young John Berry, clogger. Young John was the son's fontal name.
The name of an old landed family, 'of Tayfield,' in Fife. In Aberdeen and Angus the name is said to be a variant of Barbie. George Berrie, brouster, Inverness, 1613 Rec. Inv., II, p. 103). In the latter end of the seventeenth century Berries and Berrys were located in Strathdon, under Forbes of Brux, and in the parish of Coldstone under Farquharson of Invercauld.
