BERSTONE: An Orcadian surname derived from the pennyland of Birstone or Birstane in South Ronaldsay. Thome Birsto was tacksman of Sourquoy in 1502, and John Berston roithman between 1500 and 1522 (REO., p. 399,413). Johne of Bersto was member of assize of lawting, 1514 (OSR., I, 254), Eduerd Birsten or Byrsto was one of those respited for the slaughter of John, earl of Caithness, at battle of Summerdale, 1529 (RSS., II, 3151; OSR., I, p. 114,116), and Hugo Berstan was retoured heir of John Berstan in Clettis, his father, in 1678 (Retours, Orkney, 121). A pedigree of the family of Berstane of Cletts is given by Clouslon (REO., p. 435).
