From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(French) Dweller on, or near, marshy land.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

User-submitted Reference

The Berube surname derives from the Middle Age name Beruby given by the Normans, with other spellings like Barube in Latin, to places identified in the Domesday Book, in 1086, as Bergheby, Berchebi or Berghby. So it was first introduced in England by the Danes as a spelling of a Scandinavian name of a place written Bergaby(r). Surnames like Berrube (Normandy/France), Bergeby (Sweden), Bergby (Norway) or Børreby (Denmark) have the same origin. Some bearers of the name moved to France in the XV Century, probably because of trade activities during or after the Hundred Year war.
