This surname is derived from the famous Border town of the same name. Rather curiously the surname is not uncommon at the present day in Fife. John de Berwic was rector of Renfrew in 1295 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 562), and in the year following Geoffry of Berewick, burgess of Roxburgh, rendered homage (Bain, II, 820 and p. 197). Magister Johannes de Beruyc witnessed the gift of half of Litel Gouen to the Hospital of Polmade (Polmadie) in 1320 (REG., p. 229). Patrick de Berwic received a payment from the Exchequer in 1328 (ER., I, p. 98), William de Berwyic was burgess of Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 11), and Robert de Berewick burgess there in 1333 (REA., I, p. 54). Thomas de Berwic, burgess of Edinburgh in 1411 (Egidii, p. 44) may be the Thomas of Berwyk who was 'dene of the gilde' of Edinburgh in 1423 (LSC., 113). Thomas Bervie was member of parliament for Edinburgh, 1445 (Hanna, II, p. 483). James Berrick workman in Edinburgh in record in 1676 (Edinb. Marr.).
