User-submitted Reference
This surname is documented since IX century in the old Catalonia. The first reference is at the year 875 when the count Wilfred I of Barcelona, known as Wilfred the Hairy ("Guifré el Pilós" in Catalan language) who founded the origins of Catalonia, gives honours and properties to feudal nobles with "Bisaura" as lineage surname: the Besora's Castel ("Castell de Besora" in Catalan) which currently placed in the town "Santa Maria de Besora". (Reference in Catalan: "https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castell_de_Besora_(Osona)" )A second fortification or castel was given to the "Besora" dinasty at the end of IX century, known as Besora's Castel ("Castell de Besora") as well, but in the town of "Navès" (Reference in Catalan: https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castell_de_Besora).
But in this medieval period (IX century) the names "Bisaura", "Besora" and also "Bisora" were used without distinction: in the Romanic languages of these centuries (where Catalan derive from) the phonetic pronunciation of the words "Besora", "Bisora" and "Bisaura" are the same. But "Bisaura" has an older etymology: it is a composition of 3 words from Basque language (a pre-Roman or pre-latin language): "Bassa"+"uri"+"a" which means "the town of the forest" or "the town between ravines", according to the interpretation of different linguists. Around the X century, when the Catalan language was consolidated, the original etymology of "Bisaura" was transformed to "Besora", more in line with the pronunciation of this language, and the etymologies "Bisaura" or "Bisora" were lost.
