A well-known surname in Fife, where it is pronounced Berridge or Berritch. Mr. Beveridge (Culross and Tulliallan, II, p. 93) says the origin of the name is to be found in 'Beverege,' the name of an island in the Severn referred to by Florence of Worcester as a retreat of the Danes during a revolt of the English. The name, he correctly says, means "Beaver island," from Old English befer or beofer, and ig or ige, island. The earliest mention of the name in Scottish record is in 1302 when Walter Beverage is named as juror on an inquest at St. Andrews (Bain, II, 1350). Henry Beveragh was witness in Paisley, 1504 (RMP., p. 63). A decree against Alexander Bauerage is recorded in 1531 (Camhus., 203), David Beverage was cup-bearer to James v in 1534 (ER., XVI, p. 349), and James Baverage, son of the Queen's midwife, received a payment in 1567 (ibid., XIX, p. 386). Alexander Bavirige was a monk of Culross in middle of sixteenth century (PSAS., LX, p. 93). Robert Beverag indweller in Dysart, 1630 (PBK., p. 14). James Beverage and Andrew Beverage were fined in 1677 for brewing beer of insufficient strength, and a few days later they appeared as James and Andrew Belfarge when they appealed for remission of their fines (RPC., 3. ser.
