An individual's caste would typically dictate the profession they followed. In the case of the Bhangi, it appears their original occupation was breaking reeds to make baskets. However, for at least two-hundred years the Bhangis have been a sweeper caste.This caste is best known for cleaning toilets.
It has wrongly been reported that the caste has taken its name from the Sanskrit, bhang (भङ्ग,) a cannabis drink that the caste were said to be addicted to.
