User-submitted Reference

Our last name means "from Bihać", a border town between BiH and Croatia near the croatian province of Lika, where you'll find the highest concentration of Bičanići. The highest concentration would be found in a village called Saborsko, a mountain town on the way to Plitvice from Otočac. Bihać was at one point the capital city of the Kingdom of Croatia in the 13th century, hence the creation of our last name. Predominantly roman catholic, we moved west into Croatia during the 15th to 16th centuries during the Ottoman occupation, and subsequently to the rest of the world as the northern balkans started being ruled by the Austro-Hungarian empire (if you're from the US and know your ancestors came during the 19th to 20th century, largely to NY and Chicago, later to California), and Yugoslavia (largely Germany, Canada, Australia, US).
