(Scandinavian) belonging to Bickersteth, formerly also Bykyrstath (now Bickerstaffe, Lancs) =? Bicker’s or Bikarr’s Place. [Old Norse stað-r - Old English stede, a place] This interesting name is discussed at greater length in the author’s Place-Names of The Liverpool Dist., p. 37. If, however, it could be shown that the -er was a mere phonetic intrusion then Bickstath might signify 'the Bitches’ Place', i.e.,a hunting- villa. [Old English bicce, bicca, a bitch = Old Norse bikkia (Scot, bick, a bitch,] For example, Bickleigh in (?) Devon is referred to in a charter of Edward the Elder, dated A.D. 904, as " . . .in villa venatoria quæ Sax- onicæ dicitur Bicanleag"; although, of course, Bicanleag may mean ‘Bica’s Lea.’ [Bican, genit. of Bica]
The Old English bicker means to skirmish or contend, and a bicker-staff, therefore, probably signifies a weapon analogous to a quarter-staff, or single stick. The name belongs to the same class as Longsword, Broadspear, &c.
A name of uncertain origin; perhaps the same as Bickerstaffe.
BICKERSTATH: A corruption of Bickerstaffe.
Supposed to come from the Welsh word bicra, to fight, to bicker, and steth, a corruption of staff, used for tilting or skirmishing. Probably taken from the sign of an inn. Beker (Dutch), is a drinking—cup, Bekeren, to drink, to tipple, guzzle, with the termination steth, for sted, a place.
From Bickerstaffe; a location name in Lancashire.
Bickersteth is an old Liverpool name. From the 15th to the 17th century the name of Bykersteth or Bicksteth or Bixteth occurs several times in the list of the mayors and bailiffs of the town (B. L.). Though rare in the county, Bickersteth is still a Liverpool name.
