If, however, it could be shown that the -er was a mere phonetic intrusion then Bickstath might signify 'the Bitches’ Place', i.e.,a hunting- villa. [Old English bicce, bicca, a bitch = Old Norse bikkia (Scot, bick, a bitch,] For example, Bickleigh in (?) Devon is referred to in a charter of Edward the Elder, dated A.D. 904, as " . . .in villa venatoria quæ Sax- onicæ dicitur Bicanleag"; although, of course, Bicanleag may mean ‘Bica’s Lea.’ [Bican, genit. of Bica]
