This surname is of English origin, from Bickerton in Northumberland. There is another Bickerton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. About the year 1200 Richard of Bickirtoune had a grant of lands in Dunypace (Cambus., 83), and in 1263 Sir Richard of Bigirthon witnessed an agreement anent pasturage of the moor of Kellin (Laing, 8). Master Eustace of Bikerton was presented to the church of Duglas, Lanarkshire, in 1292 (Rot. Scot., I, p. 7), and in 1296, as Eustace de Bykretone, rector of the church of Hutremokedi (Auchtermuchty), he rendered homage (Bain, II, p. 213). John de Bigerton held the castle of Luffenoc' in 1296 (ibid., II, 857), and a payment to Elisabet de Bikertoun by the custumars of Inverkeithing is recorded in 1331 (ER., I, p. 370). Walter de Bykirtoun witnessed a charter by Arnchibald, earl of Douglas in 1401 (Swinton, p. xvii), Valterus de Bekyrtoun, miles, held husband lands in the vill and territory of Elstanfurd in the constabulary of Haddington in 1429 (RMS., II, p. 25), Robert de Bykkirtoune was lord of Lufnois (Luffness) in 1451 (RMS., II, 438), William Bykatone (an error for Bykartone) was vicar of Lochgoyll in 1456 (LCD., p. 180), and John de Bickertone appears as canon of Glasgow and presbyter of Erskyn in 1479 (REG., 422). Marion Bickertoune appears in Largs, parish of Urr, in 1641 (Dumfries).
