User-submitted Reference

The name derives from the old norse "byggland", meaning the land where barley grows. They arrived on the Cartmell peninsula in 912AD, probably from Byglandsfjord in Norway.

Biglands have not lived in Bigland Hall since the 1970s, but the coat of arms, inscribed on this and another nearby estate, is a lion rampant holding a stalk of barley, the norse origin seems to have been passed down the generations since at least the use of a coat of arms circa 1600, if not earlier.

Anglicised to Bigland, though probably nothing to do with Bignall in Staffs. Modern Norwegian has dropped a "g", hence Bygland in Norway.
