Birac Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
This surname was created between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina when Serbs who lived there feared from Croatian and Turkish attacks because they were originally from Serbia. Those were the times of hatred among Croatians and Serbs, as well as between Muslims and Serbs. Serbian families then changed their surnames massively in order to save their lives and continue living in Croatia and Bosnia and not be recognized as Serbs, so one of the newly created surnames back then was Birač, probably adjusted from Birčanin, which was the surname of a great Serbian hero who fought against the Turkish empire on the Balkans.
