From the old lordship of Birgham (1098, Brycgham) or Brigham in the parish of Eccles, Berwickshire. The place name is pronounced Birjam. John de Brigeame and others were charged with holding Dunbar Castle against the king in 1479 (APS., II, p. 125). Eliz. Birgen, heir of Adam Birgen in dominio de Birgen, 1590 (Retours, Berwick, 489), as Elizabeth Birgem or Birghem had sasine in 1591 (ER., XXII, p. 453; RPC., IV, p. 675). The village of Birgham is of historical interest as having been the place of two meetings of the Scots and English Commissioners in 1290 to settle the succession to the Scottish Crown.
