Of local origin from Birse in Aberdeenshire. Duncan de Byrss, burgess of Aberdeen in 1462 reappears in 1469 as Duncan of Birss (SCM., V, p. 23; CRA., p. 406) Margaret Birse was married in Edinburgh in 1597 (Edinb. Marr.), Samuel Birss, writer to the signet in Edinburgh, was heir to Alexander Birss, tailor burgess of Edinburgh in 1611 (Inquis., 543). James Birse (Briss or Birce) in Keillsyd was witness in Aberdeen in 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 262,272, 273), and Robert Birss was shipmaster at Montrose in 1762 (Brechin). John Birss in Dykehead of Borrowstoun is in record in 1723, and another John Birse, farmer at Bottomend, Aboyne, died in 1866.
