The home of this name seems to have been Fife and neighborhood. Robert Burt witnessed a tack by the abbot of Cupar, 1521 (SCM., V, p. 294), and a later Robert Burt in Dundee was charged with aiding the English in 1552 (Beats, p. 326). John Burt, prebendary of Moy, 1545 (REM., p. xxiii), Bessie Burt in Dunfermline, 1590 (Dunfermline). Andrew Burtt was chosen treasurer of Dysart, 1600 (Dysart, p. 26), and another Andrew Burt was notary in Dunkeld, 1649 (Inquis., 3528). John Burt, Alexander Burt, and David Burt are in record in Cassidewglie, 1649 (Fordell, p. 34). Robert Burt, cordiner in Dysart, 1695 (Dysart, p. 55), and Agnes Burt appears in Dunkeld, 1721 (Dunkeld). Eight of the name appear in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane in the seventeenth century. Charles Burt, one of the chief engravers for the U. S. Treasury Department, was bora in Edinburgh.
