Nevertheless, most of our Bishops owe their title to the custom of electing a boy-bishop on St. Nicholas' Day (v. Brand, Pop. Antiq). The ceremony was a very familiar one.

In 1291 a receipt was granted to William called 'Bissope' on behalf of Sir Dovenald, earl of Mar (Bain, II, 541). John Bischope held a land in Edinburgh c. 1426 (Egidii, p. 48), and the name is very common in the Edinburgh Marriage Records in the eighteenth century as Bischop and Bishope. Patrick Bischop was witness in Perth, 1551 (Rollok, 88). Mr. James Bischope was minister at Inverness, 1610 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 76), James Bishop was guild-brother of Glasgow by purchase, 1624 (Burgesses), and Francis Bischope was burgess of Inverness in 1627 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 9). Alexander Bischop in Northbank of Morphie, 1628 (St. Andrews), James Bishop in Whyteside, parish of Falkirk, 1676 (Stirling), and James Bishop in Linlithgow, 1684 (RPC. 3 ser X, p. 261). May have been derived from the character in the mediaeval mystery plays, but Biscop was also an Old English personal name (Searle). Bisschop 1547.
